Former AFL champion and legendary coach Kevin Sheedy has joined the ADA Australia team as brand ambassador.
“We’re beyond pleased to have ‘Sheeds’ on board; besides being an AFL living-legend he is simply a great Australian,” ADA Australia CEO Tim O’Brien said.
Having completed an apprenticeship himself when starting out, Kevin understands the challenges that young ‘tradies’ face. He also recognises the important values that completing an apprenticeship can instil in a person - teamwork, discipline, commitment and camaraderie - all valuable skills which Kevin identifies as having helped him find success and become the person he is today.
“Kevin is well-recognised for his work in helping young people realise their ambitions, both on the sporting field and off it, and holds a similar interest in mental health and the negative impact of drugs and alcohol on young Australians.
“We’re so excited to have Kevin assisting us in the important work we do in Australian workplaces, schools and sporting clubs,” Tim O'Brien said.
Kevin will assist in putting a spotlight on ADA Australia’s mental health and AOD awareness training activities, as well as providing motivational sessions with young apprentices at ADA Australia’s weekly Apprenticeship Development Days with The Victorian Branch of the Electrical Trades Union's Centre For U. (https://centreforu.com.au/)
It’s an exciting opportunity. Besides being well-recognised for his work with young AFL footballers – particularly with young indigenous players – Kevin’s commitment to the health and wellbeing of young people, for inspiring and encouraging them to be ‘the best they can be’, is a great fit with ADA Australia’s messages of “awareness, support, connection” and of living well, and being well.
This is highlighted by Kevin’s involvement in the establishment of the AFL SportsReady program, a national not-for-profit company that has steered more than 14,000 young Australians into employment and education opportunities.
Kevin will work alongside ADA Australia’s team of workplace and apprentice trainers.
ADA Australia conducts workplace, school and community-based mental health and drug and alcohol awareness training for small and large companies, organisations, unions and schools across Australia.
